What this does
Paste a toothpaste label to identify hydroxyapatite, fluoride, SLS, dyes, xylitol, and other common ingredients. A reading aid—not a safety score or dental advice.
How to read a toothpaste label
US toothpaste boxes usually split the formula into active ingredients (with a purpose, such as anticavity) and inactive ingredients. Names are typically listed in descending order by amount, with ingredients under 1% allowed in any order at the end.
Copy both lists if they are printed separately. You can paste commas, line breaks, or the Drug Facts layout. The checker looks up INCI names, common aliases such as SLS, and color numbers such as CI 42090 or FD&C Blue No. 1.
A match means the name is in our directory—not that the ingredient is good, bad, or present at a useful concentration. Percentages and ppm are shown when they appear next to a name.
What the common groups are
Most toothpastes are a short stack of jobs: an active, a polish, a humectant, a surfactant, flavor, and preservatives. The names change. The jobs usually do not.

Actives
The Drug Facts panel names the anticavity or sensitivity ingredient and its amount. In the US this is often a fluoride salt. Some fluoride-free pastes use hydroxyapatite instead, listed with the rest of the formula rather than as a monograph active.

Surfactants
These make paste spread and foam. Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) is the most common. Sodium laureth sulfate (SLES) is related but not the same. Amino-acid surfactants such as sodium cocoyl glutamate are used in some SLS-free formulas.

Color
Dyes and pigments are for appearance. FD&C names, CI numbers, and titanium dioxide are typical. They do not clean teeth. Some people prefer pastes without synthetic dyes.

Sweeteners
Sorbitol and glycerin add bulk and mild sweetness. High-intensity sweeteners such as sodium saccharin, sucralose, stevia, or xylitol cover bitter notes. Xylitol is a sugar alcohol studied in oral care; toothpaste doses are often small, and it is toxic to dogs.

Abrasives
Hydrated silica, calcium carbonate, and baking soda polish away surface film. Cleaning strength is a formula property (often discussed as RDA), not a yes/no ingredient flag.

Preservatives
Water-based pastes need something to keep microbes down. Sodium benzoate, potassium sorbate, and parabens are common. A preservative is doing formula work, not whitening or remineralizing.
What this tool does not do
It is not a safety rating, allergy diagnosis, or substitute for the printed Drug Facts panel. It does not score brands or say one toothpaste is better than another. Unrecognized names are listed as-is so you can look them up or ask a dentist or pharmacist.

Paste the ingredient list from a toothpaste box or tube. The checker matches names and aliases—hydroxyapatite, fluoride salts, SLS, dyes, xylitol, sweeteners, and other common ingredients—and shows a short explanation for each match. Matching runs in your browser.
02 Does this tell me if a toothpaste is safe?
No. Presence or absence of a name is not a safety rating, and this page is not medical advice. Use the printed Drug Facts panel, and ask a dentist or pharmacist about allergies, children, pregnancy, or a prescribed fluoride routine.
03 Do you store the ingredient list I paste?
No. The list stays in your browser for this check. We do not save it or send it to Klyyr.
04 What is SLS in toothpaste?
SLS is sodium lauryl sulfate, a detergent that helps toothpaste spread and foam. Some people find it irritating, especially with recurrent canker sores. It is not the same as SLES (sodium laureth sulfate) or SLSa (sodium lauryl sulfoacetate).
05 What counts as an artificial dye?
The snapshot flags common synthetic color additives such as FD&C Blue No. 1, Yellow 5, Red 40, and their CI numbers. Titanium dioxide is listed separately because it is a white pigment, not an FD&C dye.
06 How does hydroxyapatite show up on a label?
It may be listed as hydroxyapatite, nano-hydroxyapatite, micro-hydroxyapatite, or a blend. Nano and micro are particle-size ranges of the same mineral. For how hydroxyapatite compares with fluoride, read the hydroxyapatite vs fluoride comparison.
07 Why wasn’t a name recognized?
The directory covers typical toothpaste ingredients and aliases, not every cosmetic INCI name. Proprietary blends, typos, and uncommon botanicals may appear under “not in our directory.” You can still copy that name and look it up.
