Toothpaste ingredients to avoid.

Most toothpaste ingredients are fine for most people, so "ingredients to avoid" really means ingredients some people choose to skip. The ADA lists the ones most often reported as irritants or allergens: essential oils and flavors, menthol, citric acid and citrates, sodium lauryl sulfate, propylene glycol, PEGs, cocamidopropyl betaine, parabens, and pyrophosphates.

Others, such as artificial dyes, titanium dioxide, carrageenan, and saccharin, are avoided mainly out of preference. Reactions are rare and personal

The ADA says toothpaste ingredients may rarely cause irritation or allergic reactions. If your mouth, lips, or gums react, stop the paste and ask a dentist.

Flavors are the most common trigger

The ADA names essential oils such as spearmint, peppermint, and cinnamon as the most common source of toothpaste contact reactions. They can hide behind the word "flavor."

Preference is a valid reason
