From charcoal scrubs to hydrogen peroxide rinses, social media has turned the bathroom cabinet into a wellness battleground. With millions of views attached to oral care hacks on TikTok and Instagram, it can be genuinely hard to separate the brilliant from the damaging. The Trends Worth Your Time
Tongue scraping has been around for thousands of years, and modern research backs it up. A study published in the Journal of Periodontology (Quirynen et al., 2004) found that tongue scrapers reduced volatile sulphur compounds — the primary driver of bad breath — more effectively than toothbrushing alone. If you are not already scraping, it is one of the simplest, most evidence-backed upgrades you can make to your morning routine.
Hydroxyapatite toothpaste is having its social media moment, and for once the science fully agrees. Hydroxyapatite (HAp) makes up approximately 97% of tooth enamel, and nano-hydroxyapatite has been shown in multiple clinical studies to remineralise early enamel lesions comparably to fluoride. A randomised controlled trial published in Caries Research (Tschoppe et al., 2011) confirmed that HAp toothpaste significantly increased enamel microhardness after acid challenge. When a trend aligns this closely with your biology, it earns its permanent place in your routine.
Xylitol-containing products — chewing gums, mints and toothpastes — also have solid footing in the literature. Research published in the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews (Riley et al., 2015) concluded that xylitol fluoride toothpaste reduced caries more than fluoride-only toothpaste in children, and xylitol has been shown to inhibit Streptococcus mutans, the primary cavity-causing bacteria. Look for it in combination with remineralising actives for the best results.
The Trends Worth a Second Look
Oil pulling has legitimate roots in Ayurvedic medicine and some evidence to support its role in reducing plaque and gingivitis. A study in the Journal of Ayurveda and Integrative Medicine (Asokan et al., 2011) found that sesame oil pulling reduced Streptococcus mutans counts in saliva. That said, the evidence base remains limited, and oil pulling should complement — never replace — brushing and flossing. If you enjoy it and have 10 to 20 spare minutes, it is unlikely to cause harm. Just never skip your toothbrush afterwards.
Water flossers have gone viral as an easier alternative to traditional floss, and the science is broadly encouraging. A clinical trial published in the Journal of Clinical Dentistry (Goyal et al., 2013) found that a water flosser was significantly more effective than string floss at reducing bleeding on probing and gingivitis. The Trends to Skip
Charcoal toothpaste is one of the most persistently popular trends and also one of the most concerning. A comprehensive review published in the Journal of the American Dental Association (Brooks et al., 2017) examined 50 charcoal dental products and found that the majority lacked fluoride and that there was insufficient clinical evidence to support their safety or efficacy. More worryingly, activated charcoal is highly abrasive — repeated use can physically wear away enamel, leaving teeth more vulnerable to sensitivity and decay. The irony of a so-called whitening product that damages the very surface responsible for your tooth's natural brightness is not a small one.
High-concentration hydrogen peroxide rinses — popularised by DIY whitening videos — carry real risks when used outside regulated guidelines. While low concentrations are used safely in professional whitening products, undiluted or homemade high-concentration solutions can cause gum irritation, soft tissue damage, and heightened tooth sensitivity. A review in the Journal of Dentistry (Joiner, 2006) confirmed that hydrogen peroxide whitening is broadly safe within regulated concentrations — the phrase "within regulated concentrations" doing a lot of heavy lifting there.
Lemon juice or apple cider vinegar as a natural whitener rounds out the skip list. Both are highly acidic and can progressively dissolve enamel with repeated exposure. Enamel does not regenerate on its own — once it is structurally lost to acid erosion, no remineralisation treatment can fully restore it. This one is a hard, definitive skip.
