Most people think of vitamin D as a bone nutrient, something you top up in winter or take on a doctor's recommendation. But emerging research is drawing a much sharper picture: vitamin D plays a surprisingly direct role in the health of your teeth and gums, and researchers are studying how low vitamin D status relates to oral health. Dental symptoms alone cannot establish a vitamin D deficiency.
What Vitamin D Actually Does in Your Mouth
Vitamin D is best known for helping the body absorb calcium and phosphate, the two minerals that give tooth enamel its hardness. Without adequate vitamin D, even a calcium-rich diet may not translate into strong, well-mineralised teeth. But the vitamin's role goes further than mineral transport. Vitamin D receptors are found throughout oral tissues, including in the cells that line the gums and the ligaments that anchor teeth to the jawbone. This means vitamin D is directly involved in immune regulation and tissue repair right inside your mouth.
Vitamin D also stimulates the production of antimicrobial peptides, such as defensins and cathelicidins, which are part of the mouth's natural defence system against harmful bacteria. When vitamin D levels are low, this defence weakens, potentially allowing pathogenic bacteria to gain a foothold in the gum tissue.
The Link to Gum Disease and Tooth Decay
A 2025 systematic review by Ziada et al. examined vitamin D deficiency and oral health. The primary studies do not all agree. Lee et al. (2021) found no significant association between vitamin D deficiency and periodontitis in Korean adults aged 60 and over after adjustment. In the Norwegian HUNT study, Asante et al. (2024) found an association between lower vitamin D levels and more decayed teeth, and between very low levels and severe periodontitis. These observational findings do not prove that deficiency causes dental disease or that supplementation prevents it.
These findings make biological sense. Periodontitis is driven by an overactive inflammatory response to oral bacteria, and vitamin D is a well-established modulator of inflammation. Without it, the immune system may respond to bacterial challenge with more tissue-destructive inflammation, accelerating gum attachment loss and bone resorption around the teeth.
Vitamin D, Enamel Development, and Children's Teeth
The connection between vitamin D and dental health begins before teeth even erupt. During tooth development, vitamin D is essential for the proper formation of enamel and dentine. Research has long linked vitamin D deficiency in early childhood to enamel hypoplasia, a condition where enamel forms thinner or with structural defects, making teeth more susceptible to decay throughout life. Ensuring adequate vitamin D during pregnancy and early childhood is therefore not just about bone health; it is a foundational investment in a child's long-term oral resilience.
What You Can Do: Topping Up Vitamin D and Protecting Your Enamel
The most efficient source of vitamin D is sunlight, but factors like geography, season, sunscreen use, and time spent indoors mean that deficiency is genuinely common. Dietary sources include oily fish, egg yolks, and fortified foods, though it can be difficult to reach optimal levels through diet alone. Many health authorities recommend a daily supplement, particularly during autumn and winter months.
